Carrinet in Ehandel: “We wanted to contribute to a more sustainable society”

Our founder, Mia Ekblad, was interviewed by Ehandel about Carrinet’s journey – from a simple idea about reuse to international success in sustainable everyday products.

In the interview, Mia shares how it all started with a clear goal: to contribute to a more sustainable society and reduce the amount of single-use plastic.

“I’ve always been interested in environmental issues, especially those concerning the oceans. The idea for a reusable bag was born when my children were small, inspired by a toy bag made of net,” says Mia Ekblad.

When the EU began discussing a plastic bag tax in 2015, Mia saw her chance to bring the idea to life. Together with her colleague Håkan Tiderman, she developed a business concept based on sustainable design, quality, and reuse – and Carrinet took shape.

Since its founding in 2016, the company’s growth has been strong. In 2018, Carrinet had a turnover of 6.6 million SEK, and the following year revenue rose to 11 million SEK with a profit of 1.6 million.

The products are sold both through Carrinet’s own online store and via major grocery chains such as ICA, COOP, and City Gross, as well as internationally in countries like the UK, Spain, and Australia.

The pandemic temporarily paused some expansion plans – including a planned launch in the US – but the company has continued to grow with a focus on innovation and new materials.

“We are now launching the Carrinet Shop Set, a smart set with net bags and reusable shopping bags that make it easy to always have sustainable options on hand,” Mia explains. “We are also working with new materials, which we hope to present soon.”

Despite challenges, Carrinet continues to grow, driven by a clear vision: to make it easy for people to live more sustainably in their everyday lives.

“Consumers want to do the right thing,” says Mia. “Our job is to make it possible.”
